Whether you’re shopping for trim for your living room, planning the line of fencing that goes around your backyard, or shipping cargo using trucks, knowing what a linear foot is can save you money and prevent expensive missteps.

We now know that linear feet to feet is the same. The linear foot is just a fancy way of saying one foot in length, 12 inches, or about 30.48 centimeters. To put the measurement into practice, here is how you do it:

  • Measure the length of the piece you’re working with in feet (and inches, if necessary). For example, a board measures 8 feet 4 inches from end to end.

  • Convert inches to feet if you measured partly in inches. For instance, 4 inches = 4/12 = 0.333 ft, so 8 ft 4 in becomes 8.333 ft of linear footage.

  • If there are multiple segments, then total these segments. If you have two boards, one 8.333 ft and another 6.5 ft, you could get 14.833 feet total. 

  • Since feet only measure length, there’s no need to multiply by width or height like you would for square or cubic measurements.

You’re putting baseboards around a room. One wall measures 12 ft long, the next is 10 ft, the next comes up to 12 ft, and the last is 10 ft. The total linear footage of baseboard you require: 12 + 10 + 12 + 10 = a total of 44 linear feet.

  • Use the most reliable tape measure and measure each wall or section individually, rather than estimating.

  • Convert inches to feet early to maintain steady units.

  • Confirm corners, uneven walls, or transitions where you might need shorter sections.

How to Calculate Linear Feet for Freight?

  1. Count how many pallets (in palletized freight) you have.  

  2. Divide by 2 (to estimate rows if pallets aren’t stacked).  

  3. Multiply that number by the pallet length (usually 48 in).  

  4. Divide by 12 to convert inches into feet.  

When you ship goods on pallets, they’re loaded in rows inside a truck or container.

If the pallets are stacked on top of each other, they take up less floor space and fewer feet. If they’re not stacked, you might need two rows (or more) to fit everything.

So, “divide by 2 to estimate rows” is a rough way to guess how much floor space your shipment will take. It assumes that your pallets can be placed two wide per row inside the trailer.

For example:
You have 8 pallets, each 48″ long.
A standard truck can fit 2 pallets side by side per row, so:
8 pallets ÷ 2 = 4 rows
Each row = 48″ → 4 × 48″ = 192″
192″ ÷ 12 = 16 linear feet

So you’re using about 16 linear feet of trailer space.

  • Before calculating, confirm your pallets are stackable; non-stackable freight increases total feet. 

  • If your freight takes up more than 12 linear feet, you may be charged for a “linear foot rule” rate, or even be priced like a full truckload instead of LTL freight.

Linear Feet vs. Square Feet

While they sound much alike, a linear foot and a square foot are fundamentally different ways to measure. 

Linear feet is a measurement of length, one-dimensional. It answers: How long is it?

Square feet is an area measurement, two-dimensional (length × width). It answers: How much surface does it cover? 

Assume that you have an 8 ft high, 12 ft (96 sq ft) long wall. If you are placing carpet throughout the surface of the wall, you’d imagine it in square feet (96 sq ft). But if all you are layering in is baseboards along the bottom, you’ll measure out the 12 ft length (or all four sides in a room) as linear feet.

  • Fabric, carpeting in certain conditions, cable, or piping.

  • Trim out, lining, or trim boards around rooms.
