According to a report by IATA, global air cargo mileage has seen continuous growth for 15 consecutive months, with a 10.3% increase compared to last year. The growth is particularly noticeable on major trade routes.

With tons of cargo being served daily, this industry relies on perfect systems for things to go as they should. Due to the large volume of data that airports handle every day, one of the ways devised to make things easier is the establishment of the airport reference code. 

Understanding reference codes helps avoid business delays and any errors in air freight documentation. It is particularly important for business owners who are looking to ship internationally, to know what these airport identifiers mean, to ensure efficient and accurate logistics.

What Is the Airport Reference Code?

Airport reference codes are standardized identifiers specific to each airport. These three- or four-letter alphanumeric codes allow for easy identification, communication, and coordination in passenger and cargo transport. 

But where do airports get their name? The first reported use of airport abbreviations goes back to 1930 when airports adopted two-letter identifiers from the National Weather Service. As the industry grew over the next ten years the coding was changed to three letters to allow more airports to be coded. By the 1960s, IATA standardized the system to make sure every airport worldwide had a unique identifier.

Types of Airport Reference Codes

The two main types of international airport codes are the IATA (International Air Transport Association) and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) codes.

IATA (International Air Transport Association) 

These three-letter codes are assigned by the International Air Transport Association to all airports around the world. IATA codes are used in airline timetables, passenger tickets, boarding passes, and baggage tags to help streamline air travel operations. For instance, codes like JFK (John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York) or LHR (London Heathrow Airport) are easily recognizable and facilitate communication in the aviation industry. 

IATA codes are also critical for air cargo and freight logistics, making sure goods are routed correctly through the global supply chain. 

The IATA Airport Code Management assigns these codes in a specific manner. Whenever a new airport is being set up, or in situations when an airport has undergone some serious change like relocation, the civil aviation in question, writes to IATA seeking a new code. Such application must be supported with relevant information relating to the airport, including its location, name, and expected use.

IATA prioritizes codes that are easy to recognize and unique to avoid any confusion. When possible, the assigned airport code pertains to the naming of the airport, city, or a specific feature that makes it intuitive for users to identify. 

For example, Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport in Australia is coded by IATA as SYD (referencing its location in Sydney). Similarly, O’Hare International Airport in Chicago is coded as ORD, derived from its former name Orchard Field.

While most of these airport reference codes are based on the name or city, some IATA airport codes are tied to their original names or locations, leading to unique airport abbreviations like YYZ for Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Fun Fact 

Interestingly many of the airports, have a code that you wouldn’t exactly consider an acronym for that particular city or airport, and that’s because they have interesting anecdotes behind them.

For example, TYS for Knoxville honors Lieutenant Charlie Tyson, who died in WWII. Similarly, North Carolina’s First Flight Airport is coded as FFA, a tribute to the Wright brothers’ first successful flight. 

Another humorous airport reference code is ECP for Panama, which stands for “Everyone Can Party,” named such because it hosts so many spring breakers.

ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization)

ICAO airport codes are four-letter alphabetic designators assigned to an airport by the International Civil Aviation Organization, an agency of the United Nations. These are standard universal codes utilized primarily for air traffic control, flight planning, and other operational purposes. 

The ICAO codes are a little different than the IATA codes. They are mainly used by aviation professionals and are not commonly seen by passengers. For example, while LAX is the IATA code for Los Angeles International Airport, its ICAO counterpart is KLAX.

ICAO codes are geographically sorted and allow airports to be further classified according to geographic territories. The first one or two letters define the country or region, while the remaining letters (two or three) define the airport itself. 

Each region or country is assigned specific prefixes. For example:

“K” is used for airports in the United States;

“C” for Canada;

“E” for Northern Europe.

The second character is specific to a country or area within the region. For example:

G: United Kingdom (e.g., EGLL for Heathrow).

H: Netherlands (e.g., EHAM for Amsterdam Schiphol).

So for example, London Heathrow Airport has an ICAO code EGLL. E represents Europe, G is for the United Kingdom, and LL is for Heathrow Airport. Similarly, the John F. Kennedy Aiport is coded KJFK, Where K represents the USA and JFK represents the airport name.

Importance of the Airport Reference Code

It doesn’t matter whether it’s the aviation industry or any other field, labeling and coding products and services always allows efficient streamlining of processes of the company. 

As the aviation industry is very critical and sensitive, there is no room for mistakes. The airport reference code ensures there is no room for ambiguity by offering a clear and standardized identification for airports, which merges different languages, cultures, and systems.

Another significant advantage of using aviation and logistics codes is that they can help in relaying the information much faster, instead of using lengthy full forms. In aviation, codes such as JFK or LHR enable airlines, air traffic controllers, and logistics providers to convey information in a very quick and efficient manner.

Moreover, as the world moves into a digital era, more and more automated systems are being adopted and the automation of systems depends on uniform standardized values across all systems.
