In today’s fast-paced supply chain environment, selecting an optimal method of shipping can mean the difference between profit and loss. Businesses are always on the lookout for ways to balance cost against speed and sustainability.

The most common mode of freight transportation within the country is road freight: shipping by trains or shipping by trucks.

Understanding Rail and Truck Shipping 

Before we get into the difference between the two freight shipping methods, it is important to understand how each of them works.

In North America, trucking is the most efficient mode of freight shipping, with roughly 70% of goods being moved via trucking. It’s split up into two types: Full Truckload (FTL), in which a singular shipment takes up the entire truckload, and Less-than-Truckload (LTL), in which multiple smaller shipments share one vehicle space. An advantage of using trucking as a shipping option is that trucks can go almost anywhere, from the warehouse directly to your doorstep, making them the perfect option for short distances, just-in-time deliveries, and shipping of perishable goods.

On the other hand, shipping by train is perfect for hauling large shipments over long distances. Freight trains can carry any type of shipment, whether it is raw materials like coal, lumber, and chemicals, or finished products packaged in containers. Rail freight transport is dependent on a fixed network of tracks and depots, so it’s less flexible but far more efficient for bulk and heavy hauls.

In many cases, businesses combine both methods through intermodal shipping, where trucks are used for the first and last miles while trains handle the long hauls, resulting in an optimal mix of efficiency, cost, and coverage.

Rail vs.Truck: Which Is More Cost-Effective?

When you are dealing with freight, cost is a major component in mode selection, and it is important to consider the differences between rail and truck shipping.

For long-distance and bulk transport, rail has a substantial cost advantage. According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), freight trains can move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of fuel. Since fuel is a core cost component, this advantage can result in a lower cost per ton-mile for rail cargo.

For instance, an industry analysis revealed that direct rail shipments cost around US$70.27 per net ton, whereas on-the-road truck shipments cost around US$214.96 per net ton. This means that in suitable circumstances, shipping freight by rail costs less than a third of truck transport. On top of that, many companies are raising pay and offering better benefits to attract and keep truck drivers, since the shortage keeps widening. This increases the trucking price.

Overall, for shipments that only cover a couple of hundred miles or need door-to-door delivery, trucking is better, as rail shipments will require more complex terminal handling and transfers, which add cost. 

Rail vs. Truck: A Look at Speed and Reliability 

Another key factor when comparing train and truck transportation is transit time and consistency.

Rail freight often reigns superior for long-haul moves. According to Union Pacific, “transit times for rail and over-the-road trucking can be comparable,” and rail has the advantage of avoiding construction delays and road traffic. 

Additionally, shipping by rail generally offers more reliable transit times because trains function on dedicated tracks and set schedules, mitigating the effects of accidents, weather, and traffic jams, something trucks have to deal with quite often. 

The bottom line is that if your shipment is traveling a long distance on a fixed route, shipping by train provides strong scheduling reliability and competitive speed, but if you need quick, short-distance service, truck shipping might be the best option. 

Environmental Considerations: Emissions and Fuel Efficiency

From a sustainability perspective, shipping by train is far more efficient and emits fewer greenhouse gases (GHGs) as compared to truck shipping.

As mentioned above, train shipping moves one ton of freight for 500 miles, making it three to four times more fuel-efficient than trucks. The AAR reports that switching from truck to train cargo shipping can reduce GHG emissions by 75%.

Furthermore, despite carrying a much higher share of freight ton-miles, rail transportation takes up a relatively low percentage of the total U.S. transportation emissions, with only 0.6% of GHG emissions being used by rail freight. As an illustration, the Union Pacific Railroad states that one of its freight trains can transport as much cargo as roughly 300 trucks, which lowers emissions, traffic, and fuel consumption all at once. 

Still, there are certain environmental costs that come with train shipping. Numerous locomotives continue to operate on diesel, and the infrastructure for alternative fuels and electrification is still developing. At the same time, truck shipping is becoming ecologically responsible with cleaner engines, hybrid and electric trucks. 

However, the core benefits of rail transport remain clear. In comparison to truck shipping, rail still provides a significantly lower carbon footprint for long-distance bulk transport, an essential consideration for companies committed to sustainability.

First and Last-Mile Logistics: Key Challenges

One aspect of rail and truck freight comparison that is often overlooked but is extremely important is “first mile and last mile.” Here are the major challenges for the truck and rail modes:

  • Drayage Complication: When shipping by train, oftentimes you have to rely on trucks for the first and last leg of the delivery (short-haul trucking shipment from the rail yard to the warehouse or retailer), which increases handling and costs. 

  • Infrastructure Problems: Railroad freight transportation is often hindered by a lack of infrastructure. For example, rail transport needs tracks, switches, and bridges, so not every place can support a rail terminal. Trucks, though, can go pretty much anywhere.

  • Urban Congestion & Coordination Cost: In first and last mile truck shipping, there are often congestion, drayage delays, and higher handling costs, especially in crowded urban areas or terminals. It is one of the most complex elements of the supply chain to organize.

  • Flexibility & Scheduling Trade-Offs: Trucks have a distinct advantage in terms of flexibility, specifically when it comes to short distances, time-sensitive, or door-to-door deliveries. In contrast, rail networks have fixed routes, inflexible schedules, and terminal access is necessary. If your shipment requires a diversion, needs to be rerouted in response, or reaches a destination that doesn’t have rail service, then trucking is the only option.

To sum up, if you elect to go by rail (or rail-intermodal), you are going to have to budget and plan for the truck-leg(s) before and after the rail portion. Poor coordination, lack of infrastructure, or flexibility can erode rail’s cost advantage, sometimes making purely trucked delivery more practical for shorter or complex routes.
