After you understand what is sea freight, it comes to selecting a seaport as the departure port for your cargo in China. The seaport ranking based on the busyness can provide valuable insights for you.

In this article, we’ll introduce some vibrant China seaports and well-established ocean freight companies we recommend, all of whom play a pivotal role in ensuring your seamless global sea shipping.

What Is a Seaport?

How to define a seaport? Seaports come in various types like cruise ports, cargo ports, fishing ports, etc. For the cargo port, a seaport means a place on the coast where ships come to load and unload goods. It connects sea freight with land transport (trains or trucks).

Seaports usually have special equipment, like cranes and storage areas, to handle different types of cargo, such as containers or bulk goods like cars or machines. They are important for international trade, helping move goods between countries.

What is the seaport code (UN/LOCODE)?

Shanghai Port

Shanghai Seaport is one of the biggest seaports in the world and the largest seaport in China. Its cutting-edge infrastructure, large container handling facilities, and strategic position along the Yangtze River Delta make it a vital hub for both imports and exports.

Shenzhen Port

Shenzhen is a planned city in Guangdong, a province in the southeastern part of China. It is one of the four first-tier cities in China and one of the central cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Like Shanghai Seaport, Shenzhen Seaport is also one of the busiest seaports in the world. It is composed of nine seaport areas: Yantian, Shekou, Chiwan, Mawan, Dongjiaotou, Fuyong, Shayuchong, Xiadong, and Neihe. Close to Hong Kong, this port has become a key trade gateway for the Pearl River Delta region and beyond.

When exporting from Shenzhen, Yantian and Shekou are the two most commonly used ports. Yantian Port is located on the northern shore of Mirs Bay. Shekou Port is located at the southern tip of the Shekou Peninsula.

Tianjin Port

Tianjin Xingang Port, located in Tianjin, is one of the largest and busiest seaports in Northern China. It serves as a crucial gateway to Beijing and the surrounding regions. Tianjin Port handles a diverse range of cargo and contributes significantly to China’s domestic and international trade.

Ningbo Port

Ningbo Port, situated in Ningbo, Zhejiang province. It is a major deepwater port on the east coast of China. Ningbo ocean port is an important trade hub for eastern China partly because it is located near the Yangtze River Delta.

Qingdao Port

Qingdao Port, located in Shandong province, is also one of the leading seaports of shipment in Northern China. It has excellent facilities for handling containers, bulk cargo, etc.

Hong Kong Port

Hong Kong Port has historically been an essential hub for trade and logistics, providing access to China’s southern regions and beyond.

Nansha Port

When speaking of Guangzhou Port, people will think of Nansha Port or Huangpu Port. Nansha Port is one of the fastest-growing seaports in South China. It plays a significant role in the Pearl River Delta region, connecting international trade routes and handling a large volume of container traffic.

With its deep-water facilities, Nansha Port is a key gateway for both imports and exports in southern China, especially for industries in Guangdong province.

Xiamen Port

Xiamen Port also lies on the southeastern coast of China. This seaport serves as a gateway for trade with Taiwan and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Dalian Port

Situated in the northeastern region of China, Dalian Port is the largest port in Liaoning Province and a major hub for trade in Northeast Asia. This place is rich in natural resources. You can often see oil, coal, grain, and containerized goods in Dalian Seaport. It is also a key link between China, Japan, and South Korea.
